Rethinking Export Packaging: Balancing Sustainability and Shelf Life
Sustainability requirements from European and UK retailers have shifted from a preference to a contractual requirement over the past two seasons, particularly around recyclable and FSC-certified corrugate.
The challenge is that packaging changes cannot come at the cost of fruit protection — ventilation, stacking strength and cushioning all directly affect arrival quality.
We have piloted FSC-certified single-material cartons across our grape and pomegranate lines, achieving comparable transit performance to our legacy packaging while meeting recyclability targets.
Full rollout across the citrus range is planned ahead of the next export season, with buyer-specific carton artwork available on request.
